The IBM 3996 Optical Library uses 60 GB UDO-2 optical disk technologies and is designed to be externally attached with an option of three models. The IBM 3996 offers attachment to a variety of the IBM System I family of workstations and servers. The Model 32 offers one optical disc drive and the ability of 32 disks maximum that allows 960GB of physical capacity. The Model 80 offers two optical disk drives and the ability of 72 disks maximum that allows 2.4TB of physical capacity. The Model 174 offers two optical disk drives and the ability of 166 disks maximum that allows 4.98TB of physical capacity. The Model 32 has the option of adding a second drive.
